Wye Valley Champagne Rhubarb

09 May 2017

This variety of Rhubarb can be ‘forced’ or ‘unforced’.

When ‘forced’ the stalk /stems are a striking deep pink with a sweet, delicious taste.

A few Champagne Rhubarb Facts…………

> Did you know that Champagne Rhubarb is considered to be a heritage variety & is one of the earliest known strains of rhubarb to be grown in the UK ?

> Two year old 'crowns' are planted in the Autumn which allows crops to be ready for harvesting around early March and then they are normally available until the approx the end of June.

> Champagne Rhubarb is a unique variety that can actually be ‘forced’ or ‘unforced’.

> ‘Forced’ is when the rhubarb is grown in darkness & ‘unforced’ is when the rhubarb is allowed to grow naturally in daylight.

> Both techniques however, still allow the Champagne Rhubarb to retain its natural sweetness.
