From Peaches & Plums, to Apricots & Cherries

Stone fruit are types of fruit that contain a single stone or ‘pit’. They are also sometimes known as drupes. Covered in a thick skin (or endocarp), stone fruit have a fleshy soft exterior (or mesocarp) surrounding a stone containing the seed.

Common types of stone fruits include peaches, nectarines, plums, apricots and cherries.

Due to the short season in the UK, most of our stone fruit is grown overseas.

Popular Stone Fruit

Peaches are a popular stone fruit which have a fuzzy type of skin and taste sweet and juicy. The texture of a peach changes as it ripens. Peaches work well in both sweet and savoury dishes, and pair nicely with cheese. Nectarines have a firm, smooth skin. The riper they are, the juicier they become. The difference between peaches and nectarines is due to a slight gene variant giving them slightly different characteristics. Plums are one of the most cultivated fruits in the world. They are most often purple and firm, but easy to bite, and the flesh is sweet with the skin giving a tarte aftertaste.

Apricots have soft, velvety skin with a pale yellow/ orange colouring. Similar to plums in size and taste, apricots are also sweet and firm, however, less tarte in flavour and are also commonly dehydrated into dried fruit. Cherries are small heart shaped fruits that have both sweet and sour varieties. Sweet cherries are those that are primarily eaten raw and have a black/purple colour, but also work well in cooked dishes. Sour cherries are even smaller and too bitter to eat raw, so are often cooked with sugar and used for desserts and preservatives. Olives are also classed as a type of stone fruit! You can find out more about the olives we have available in our dry store range.
