Market Report

Vegetables

Spanish broccoli is now underway, and quality is very good.
Warm weather has helped growth during the autumn period. The crop required for January and early spring has now been covered with straw to protect from the colder temperatures.
UK cauliflower will continue up to December, when we will see a mix of UK and Northern France supplies to maintain availability through winter.
Quality and availability of both are good, red season may run longer before Egyptian supply starts in spring, while yellow should see us through until next summer.
Crop yields are average due to high weed pressure in the fields, but the quality is good and there are no availability issues expected.
Lifting has been completed throughout the UK. Despite the exceptionally dry weather in the summer months, which was deeply concerning following the production in previous years, yields are reported to be quite varied across the country, depending on the growing region and their accessibility to water. Availability of larger sizes seemed to be a cause for concern due to the hot weather, which stunted some of the tuber growth, but may not be as bad as once thought. This season we will see issues such as internal defects and some tuber bruising, as well as concerns over how well the crop will perform in stores, but overall, it has been a positive growing season.
Cabbage is a slow growing crop. A single harvest and lack of rain have resulted in smaller head sizes, averaging around 600g, which will be a heavy cost for many growers. Recovery is not possible, as cabbage must be harvested now and stored for the winter.
Savoy quality is superb despite the heat earlier this year and the UK supply will take us through into the new year. Imports will probably be needed around April/ May, depending on the UK winter.
Spring greens and kale have grown well through September and will continue through winter. Imported kale and Portuguese pointed cabbage may be required if we experience a long period of heavy frost this winter.
Quality from Scotland is good, as Scotland had much better growing conditions than England.

Leaf

There is a mix of UK glasshouse, Italian and Spanish supply. Quality and availability are good with no issues foreseen.
Spanish leaf will take us from December through until UK restarts in June next year, quality is very good.
As with fancy leaf, Spanish supply will take us from December through until UK restarts in June next year, quality is very good.

Berries & Grapes

The main supply is from Mexico and Guatemala, with no supply or quality issues expected.
Main supply is from South Africa sea freight with good availability. Towards the end of December, we will move to Chilean and Moroccan fruit. No issues expected.
Availability remains a challenge due to delays at ports of Moroccan fruit. Following crop losses, the Spanish crop is still coming through, albeit in low volumes.
Availability seems to be strong going forward, with supply from Egypt and Morocco; however, there have been a small number of quality issues.
Greek Crimson is now coming to an end, with supply moving to the Southern Hemisphere for winter, starting in Brazil and then down to South Africa.
Peruvian Ivory is underway, moving into Brazil in December before South African supply starts in the new year.

Exotics

Peruvian supply will take us through winter. Quality is very good, and no supply issues are expected.
Supply has mainly been from India. Rain in India has affected a few shipments, with Thailand as a backup. Quality is very good.
South African supply will continue through winter. Quality excellent, and no issues are foreseen.
Moroccan supply is underway. Delays entering Europe have affected arrivals, but Egyptian supply is running alongside to maintain availability. Quality is good.
Mainly Portuguese supply, with excellent quality. Spain will serve as backup through winter, and quality is good.

The main Brazilian season is underway with Peru as a backup through autumn. Quality is good.

Mainly “Palmer” followed by “Tommy Atkins”, which will take us through winter.
Supply and quality are good, with no problems expected for the coming season.
Egyptian supply started as planned and is expected to continue through winter. Quality is very good.
Currently supplied from Kenya, with Egypt expected just before Christmas. Quality is very good.
