Fruit & Veg Celebration

With so many varieties available, different ways of growing, health benefits, uses and recipes available; Over the next 12 months, we'll be highlighting all the great things about 12 types of produce. To celebrate the fruit and veg we'll be providing all the info you could need on the produce along with recipe ideas, introductions to the fantastic growers, events focussing on the produce, and a monthly competition for chefs and kids!

December

Yes, that’s right, because nothing ever starts in December, we are addressing that and using it as the month to begin celebrating fantastic produce! And there was no doubt what we should shout about….of course, it’s got to be the wonderful sprout!

It’s hard to think of something so small creating such strong opinions. However, these tiny balls of green divide the nation. Love them or hate them, the sprout really does deserve more than just a place once a year, on the Christmas dinner table. Many people’s hatred of sprouts comes from childhood nightmares of having them boiled for hours – with that delightful, overcooked sprout smell engulfing the whole house! But times have changed, and creativity in the kitchen has turned many of the haters to lovers! So here’s to sprouts… For life, not just for Christmas.

Check out all the things you could ever wish to know about Brussels sprouts, including growing information, nutritional info, recipes, storage tips and more, over on our dedicated sprout page here

Chefs competition - a chance to show creativity with fresh produce!

As part of our fruit and veg celebration, we are holding a monthly competition for chefs to suggest dish ideas using the produce of the month. The best dish idea each month will win a prize and be included in a recipe book that will be published at the end of the fruit & veg celebration in December 2020. To enter your recipe ideas, simply tag Oliver Kay Produce in a photo of your dish on social media Instagram, Twitter or Facebook, with a short description and the hashtag #fruitvegcelebration. Alternatively, you can email us a photo with a description to: competiton@oliverkayproduce.co.uk. We will be in touch with the chefs submitting the best dishes for a full recipe to include in the recipe book – don’t forget to show off your creativity! Full terms and conditions are available here.

Kids competition - they love fruit & veg too so get them involved!

We know there is a lot of young talent out there, and in order to show off the skills of the UK’s young aspiring chefs and artists, we will also be running competitions each month for under 16’s to join in the celebration. We are inviting the young people of the UK to design a character and a dish associated with the produce of the month. For example; December is sprout month so we would like a drawing of a character working in hospitality – a waiter, a chef, bar staff, managers! Use your imagination and give them a personality. And draw or write about a dish that includes sprouts – it can be as wacky as you like – sprout ice cream anyone?! The best entry each month will receive a fruit hamper and have their artwork featured in our final recipe book. Click here for a downloadable poster to promote the campaign in your local school or kids club.

Entries can be submitted via social media, tagging us in via one of the platforms: InstagramTwitter or Facebook, with the hashtag #fruitvegcelebration, or emailed to competition@oliverkayproduce.co.uk. Remember to include the drawing of your character (not forgetting to give them a name!). And a drawing or description of the dish along with your name, age, a contact number or email address (this can be submitted by a parent, guardian or teacher). Entries will only be accepted with consent from the parent / legal guardian and must be submitted by the parent / legal guardian or teacher. Group entries from schools are welcome.  Full terms and conditions are available here.
