It's All About Apples!

Apples are a pome fruit grown on trees and classified as a member of the rose family (Rosaceae). Apples are fruits that have a core with a number of small seeds that are encased in an edible layer of flesh ad skin. Colour usually depends on sun exposure; redder or pinker apples tend to be sweeter whereas, green apples tend to be more acidic.

There are countless varieties of apples, so seasonality differs, but pollination typically occurs in May meaning UK apple season spans from late August/ September. During the UK season, we source many of our apples from Southern England.

Firm with crisp, juicy flesh, the Granny Smith apple is a large green with a sharp, sour flavour. It is a popular apple for desserts as it stays firm when baked and mixing with sugar counters its sour taste.

Native to the UK; Bramley apples are tart and acidic. They are rarely eaten raw and work best in cooked fruit compotes, crumbles, chutneys and other desserts.

Gala apples are fine-textured with a sweet flavour and floral notes. They can be eaten raw on their own or used for cooking in sauces.

Cox’s apples are a variety native to the UK. They are medium in size and finely-grained with an excellent flavour and a mottled orange-red appearance.
